Liliana and her Cats Adventures – The Family Vacation Adventure
By, Lisa Fallon
The sun rose softly over Cape Cod Bay, painting the sky in watercolor streaks of peach and gold. Liliana, her mom and dad and her four cats had arrived just the night before, their little cottage tucked among the dunes where the salty air whispered through the tall grass.
This morning, Liliana woke first. She ran to the window, her bare feet padding on the wood floor, and gasped at the sight of the ocean just beyond the hill. “The beach!” she called to her cats, her voice bright with excitement. All cats looked up eager with the same excitement. They had never been to the beach before!
Her mother smiled sleepily holding her coffee in hand. “Let’s go before the tide comes in.” Her father, holding her bucket and pail, laughed. “I’ll race you to the shore!”
Minutes later, Liliana and her cats were running along kicking up the warm sand behind them. She carried her red pail and shovel, her parents following with a blanket and picnic basket. The sea breeze fluttered her hair as gulls called overhead. The water shimmered, a thousand diamonds in motion. Liliana could not wait to jump into the water.
They spent the morning building sandcastles—towers, moats, and tiny bridges that crumbled and reformed under their hands. Her father shaped perfect turrets with steady fingers, while her mother decorated the walls with shells and bits of sea glass. Liliana added a small red flag made from a stick and a scrap of ribbon she’d brought from home. She was careful to keep the cats away. She knew how mischievous they could all be!
When the waves finally reached their masterpiece, the family sat together and watched the tide gently reclaim it. The girl rested her head against her mother’s shoulder. “Do you think the ocean keeps our castles somewhere deep inside it?” she asked. Her mother smiled. “I think it really does remember them.” Her father agreed.
Later, as the afternoon light softened, they walked the shoreline collecting treasures—smooth pebbles, scallop shells, and one perfectly round piece of sea glass that gleamed like a secret. The cats all ran ahead splashing in the water and getting them all wet. The air smelled of salt and happiness. What a perfect day at the beach in Cape Cod!
When the sun began to dip, painting everything in honey and rose, they spread their blanket and shared sandwiches and lemonade, watching the horizon melt into evening. Liliana looked at her parents, then at the vast ocean before them, and whispered, “Can we come back tomorrow?” Her father grinned. “Every day this week.” He said to her. And for that small stretch of summer, in a quiet corner of Cape Cod, their laughter became part of the wind, the waves, and the memory of the sea. Liliana looked at all her four cats with love in her heart as they were stretched out into the grass. She whispered to them “My team. My family. My everything.”
