Liliana and Her Cats Adventures - The Holiday Series - The New Year’s Wish
By, Lisa Fallon
Snowflakes drifted outside the window, soft and slow. Liliana sat by the fire, wrapped in her favorite blanket. The old year was ending, and the new one was about to begin. Zeus purred on her lap. Leia curled beside her feet. Bonnie and Piper were getting mischievous; their laughter-like meows filling the room.
On the table sat a little box of golden paper stars. Liliana picked one up and smiled. “Tonight,” she said, “we’ll make New Year’s wishes.” The cats gathered close, watching curiously. Zeus tilted his head. Leia brushed her tail along the box. Bonnie tried to bat one of the stars away. And Piper meowed as if to say, I have a wish too!
Liliana wrote on her star -“I wish for new adventures… and maybe a new friend.” She folded the wish carefully and set it beside the window. Outside, snow sparkled under the moonlight, and the world felt quiet and full of promise.
When the clock struck midnight, fireworks bloomed in the sky—bursts of gold, silver, and pink that lit up the snow. Liliana laughed softly. “Happy New Year, my loves!” The cats meowed back, tails flicking like tiny fireworks.
As the last spark faded, a soft sound came from outside — a distant bark. Liliana’s heart fluttered. She went outside to listen again. She pressed her face to the frosty glass and looked in at the cats looking out at her. "There was nothing there now, only the sparkle of snow." She said to them through the window. “Maybe next year,” she whispered, smiling.
She placed her paper star inside the small wooden box labeled "Wishes". Then she turned out the light and snuggled under her blanket. Zeus and Leia purred around her like a warm, living quilt. Bonnie slept on the rug, and Piper snuggled under the night stand.
As Liliana drifted to sleep, she dreamed of pawprints in the snow, a soft, fluffy, tan tail, and a joyful bark echoing through the trees. The stars twinkled through the window, as if they’d heard her wish and were keeping it safe.
Morning came, bright and still. Liliana yawned, stretched, and smiled. Her paper star glowed faintly in the sunlight. Zeus blinked at her. Leia rubbed her head against her leg. Bonnie purred looking up at the star. And Piper chirped softly, still half asleep as if to say, Something wonderful is coming.
Liliana whispered, “Four cats—my team, my family, my everything.” Then she added softly, “And maybe someday… a puppy too.”
Outside, a single snowflake landed on the window glass, sparkling like a tiny star. Liliana smiled. It looked almost like a promise.
