Lucia Guerrero had just arrived in Montréal from Caquetá, Colombia, and the cold air made her cheeks tingle with surprise.
They hugged her tightly, and on the short drive to their home she listened as Valentina and Juan explained why they had come to Canada.
They said Colombia wasn’t safe anymore for their mountain home, and that Lucia would stay in Canada for a while until her mother could join them.
Lucia felt her heart tighten thinking of her mother, but Valentina promised that her mother was gathering their belongings and would come in a few months.
