Liliana and her Cats’ Adventures — The Secret Garden
Written By, Lisa Fallon
Liliana lived in a little brick house at the edge of town with her Mom and Dad. Her house wasn’t quiet—oh no. It was filled with purrs, meows, and the patter of paws.
Because Liliana had four cats. Zeus, the grey tabby cat was the oldest, with wise eyes. Leia, the calico cat was lazy but still playful, always sleeping, and wanting food. Bonnie, the brown-and-orange tabby cat was shy, hiding behind curtains and under chairs. And Piper, the black and white tuxedo cat… well, Piper was the youngest and a ball of energy. Liliana loved them all. They each had their own personalities, and that’s what Liliana loved the most about each one of them. “They’re my team,” she said proudly.
One bright sunny morning, Liliana noticed something different out in the backyard she had never seen before. She saw a small patch opening in the tall green grass by the back fence. Spring had sprung. The yard was green and colorful. There was a flutter of birds in the sky and a trail of petals, and just beyond the garden fence—a gate in the back she had never seen before. “Let’s go check it out!” said Liliana to her team. Her cats meowed in agreement.
The gate led to a wild, blossoming secret garden. Tall grasses swayed. Flowers twinkled in every color. At the very center stood a huge pine tree, its branches twisting high into the sky. And hanging from one of those branches…was Liliana’s red ribbon. She didn’t even realize it was missing! But the ribbon was far too high on a branch for her to reach. The cats looked up in wonder.
Zeus tilted his head. Think carefully. Bonnie crept closer, meowing loudly. Is it safe? Piper jumped in the air. She knew she could get it! Liliana laughed. “You’re right. Let’s do this together.” Piper who knew she was the youngest and the strongest scrambled up, swift as a squirrel. Bonnie who was trembling, looked up at Piper and encouraged her to be brave, unlike her. And Leia being lazy decided a nap might be in order, but cheered Piper on all the way.
At last, Piper stretched out one paw…and tugged the red ribbon free. It fell into Liliana’s hands. Liliana clapped. “You did it!” Piper climbed back down and jumped into her arms. Liliana was so happy!
Liliana placed the missing ribbon back into her hair and together, they all explored the beautiful garden! There were flowers, and trees, and an open meadow in the distance where a family of deer were standing tall. Squirrels were gathering acorns and bunny rabbits were hopping among the tall grass. “What a wonderful afternoon.” Liliana said to the cats. As she explored some more, she realized she was late for lunch, so they all headed back through the magic gate and made their way back to the house.
That evening, Liliana sat on the porch in her favorite rocking chair with Piper in her lap (the hero of the day) and Zeus, Bonnie and Leia lay at her feet. The garden adventure was their secret. She couldn’t wait to visit the secret garden again. Her heart was full of love and purrs. “My Four cats,” Liliana whispered. “My team. My family. My everything.” “Our adventures together are just beginning.” She told them all.
